Your Child’s Dental Exam Explained

August 25, 2021

The old saying, “Start them young,” couldn't be truer than when referencing your child’s dental health.

Dental anxiety is real. So it’s important to get your child accustomed to visiting the dentist at a young age. We recommend booking their first appointment within six months after the first tooth erupts and no later than them turning a year old. By taking them to a warm and friendly clinic, you’ll help ease any anxieties or fears they (or you) may have while visiting the dentist. Here at Kildonan Crossing Dental Centre, our team of Winnipeg dentists provide pediatric dentistry services in our welcoming, family-friendly clinic.

One of our essential pediatric dentistry services are dental exams. Dental exams are just what they sound like, quick looks into the mouth to see what is happening in there. It is a preventative dental care procedure to ensure your little ones have a bright and healthy smile today and for many years come.

What Can I Expect In My Child’s Dental Exam?

Each child is different and some children require visits to the dentist more often than others, so it’s important to bring them in for their dental exam and regular check-up and cleanings to identify their current needs.

Here’s what you can expect in your child’s dental exam:

  • Free under three years old. We offer a free dental exam for their first visit to our clinic. This is available for kids aged three years old and younger.
  • Administer a dental check-up. This can include evaluating current dental conditions and at-home oral hygiene practices. The dentist will check for any lumps and sores in their mouth and give tips on how to improve their dental health.
  • Take a dental x-ray. Not everything can be diagnosed by the dentist with their sight alone. They use powerful tools such as dental x-rays to check for any underlying issues your child may have.
  • Recommend dental treatments and procedures. Your child’s dentist may recommend options to improve their smile. If their teeth need to be straightened, orthodontics (braces) or Invisalign may be recommended. Dental sealants may also be recommended if your child is prone to tooth decay. Does your kid play contact sports? Custom-fit mouthguards can protect their teeth from damage.
