Is Calcium Good For Your Teeth?

July 7, 2021

Your body needs calcium because it helps strengthen bones. But did you know that calcium is also essential for your teeth?

This mineral keeps your teeth healthy and your enamel (a protective layer of your teeth) strong. It also helps prevent tooth erosion and helps fight cavities.

We recommend an average of 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day for adults. That’s equivalent to three glasses of milk. Women over 50 and men over 70 need to increase their intake to 1,200 milligrams.

What Foods Are Rich In Calcium?

How do you get your recommended daily intake in calcium? You can take supplements but you should add calcium-rich foods to your daily diet. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t necessarily have to drink milk every day. There are plenty of other non-dairy calcium-rich foods you can eat to sustain your mineral needs.

Here are some foods that are a great source of calcium, and we included options for vegans.

  • Milk
  • Yoghurt
  • Cheese
  • Canned sardines and pink salmon with bones
  • Fortified soy, almond and rice milk
  • Green leafy vegetables such as collard greens, turnip, kale and spinach
  • Seeds
  • Beans
  • Almonds
  • Tofu
  • Oranges
